MOUROUZIS" *****
B' Georgaki 2, Kalvia, Attikis
TEL: 22990-48371
www.mourouzis.gr
DIRECTIONS: Get onto the Attiki Odos in the direction of Markopoulou. Keep straight
for Markopoulou (do not turn-off left for the Airport!). When the motorway ends,
keep straight on the dual carriageway, in the direction for Lavrio & Sounion
(passing the turnoffs for Markopoulou on your left). Keep going and you will
see a turnoff for Kalivia on the right (there are two). Drive all the way into
the centre of Kalivia and locate the church. The taverna (along with other tavernas)
are on a sort of square not far from the church. The taverna has it's own parking
lot round the back somewhere - look for Parking sign. Do note the way you came
as it's easy to lose your way on the way home. To get to the Attiki Odos for
Athens go back out along the road passing the church with the church on your
right hand side (and a greengrocers to your left).
NOTE: If, while on the dual-carriageway, you reach the turnoff for Kouvaras
on the right (which actually crosses left over the bridge) you have just gone
too far. Turn off, turn left across the bridge over the dual carriageway, rejoin
the main road, get in the centre lane and prepare to turn left at the sign for
Kalivia.
COMMENT: The
hash ate lunch there on 22nd Jan. 2006. It was the best
and cheapest meat-based meal we could remember having in Athens!
The brizolas, pithakia and kokoretsi were tasty, juicy & tender. Huge
portions of everything! All the meat we could eat and including thick yoguhurt
with quince dessert -plus- continuous red & white wine cost us 12 Euros
each.
NOTE: Starters etc. & Meat served on LARGE plates so be careful not
to over order!

Anoixi
(also called Aniksi or Anne Ick See) (Athens
Northern Suburbs)
From Kifisia take Kifisias Ave northwards through Erithrea,
Ekali and past Drosia.
After Lidl Supermarket (on your right just after Drosia) take the next turning
right (Odos Samou) and then park in street or on wasteland in trees.
From National Road come off at junction 'Varibombi' and turn right (if coming
from South) and follow road up to a traffic light T junction. Turn left and
go through Ekali, Drosia etc.
(Onon will be Pizzas at Los Pinos in Drosia )
Aghia Paraskevi (Athens
Northern Suburbs)
From the South:... Go up
Messogeion Ave away from Athens towards Aghia Paraskevi. About 50 metres before
you reach the Aghia Paraskevi church you will come to the main square on your
right, turn RIGHT off Messogeion Ave onto the square (there is a Goody's on
your right) and drive anti-clockwise round the square - it's a one-way system!
The church is now on your left. Turn RIGHT at the junction (HHH sign) &
head up the hill along Ag. Ioannou Road past all the shops and restaurants to
the top where the Deree / American College will be directly in front of you
(and also Mount Hymmettos). Here turn left (HHH sign) into Gravias Road, drive
about 400 metres and turn right at the sign to Aghios Ioannou Monastery. (HHH
sign). Follow the road up, passing over the New Highway and keep going 'till
you see a wide dirt road on the right (HHH sign). We will all meet there where
there is plenty of parking space.
If you get to the Monastery then you've gone too far so turn back unless you
wish to spend your day with the Nuns.
From the North:.... make
your way to Aghia Paraskevi church square somehow via Halandri or Stavros flyover,
then same as above but drive in reverse... Signs from Agia Paraskevi sq on Messogeion
and up the hill towards Deree College.
Alternative - R1717 - 2010 - FC - Aghios Ioannou Monastery:
"Sort of behind Deree College, Agia Paraskevi"
Exit Attiki Odos (IMMITOS RING) at Y3, "Dimokritou"
At the exit, turn right onto Neapoleos, then first right onto Agia Pelagous
At the top of the street. left onto Gravias street.
Pass the front of Deree College, then turn right up the road onto Ymittos.
There is a "No Entry" sign with access times posted here!
We'll be somewhere up this road, but I don't remember exactly where, because it's a few years since we've run here!
ALTERNATIVELY (Without using the motorway):
From Ag. Paraskevi Square (you will need to drive round the square) turn right and drive all the way up to the top of Agiou Ioannou street (you will pass all the coffee shops etc) until you face Deree College. Turn left on Gravias street & pass the front of Deree College, then turn right up the road (called Anatolikis Mesogeiou) going up to Mount Ymittos. There is a "No Entry" sign with access times posted here!
Several Hash signs will be up so follow these.
Either from the Katehaki Road, or the City Centre, get onto Leof. Vouliagmenis heading towards well ... Vouliagmeni.
Drive down Vouliagmenis past the traffic lights at City Plaza (which is on your left), but then move into the left hand lane ready to turn left at the next major set of traffic lights at the small St. Nicholas Church. (In heavy traffic you can't see this church because it is so small - in which case you should look out for a large Fujitsu building on your right before the church!) Turn left at these lights, into Riga Feraiou.
**
Continue up this road until the end, and at the traffic lights turn right into
Gounari. Take your first left, after a bus stop (Porou), and then the first
right into Kavalas. Continue along this road (and then up one) and in a short
while you will come to a park (on the left) with an outdoor theatre. Hash starts
here in the park.
Pg. 200, A3, of the Athens Road Atlas
From the South:
Head towards the City Centre,
past Sklavenitis and turn right at the small
church into Riga Feraiou. Then follow the directions as above from **.
Ano Glyfada-2
A - Z road map grid: 196 E3
Coming from Athens
Get on Vouliagmenis Avenue (the major road connecting Athens and Glyfada/Voula)
Head South until you see the CITY PLAZA shopping mall on your left.
This is about 12km from Athens city centre.
Turn left at the traffic lights just after the CITY PLAZA into Antheon St.
Pass 5 streets and go straight over the traffic lights at the 6th street (Gounari
St).
Carry on up Antheon heading towards the mountain (note that after a while Antheon
becomes Metzobo St).
Continue along this road (Antheon/Metzobo) until the tarmac ends.
Turn right here into Papaflessa St.
About 400m down Papaflessa there is a clearing on the right - we meet here.
Coming from Voula etc
Get on Vouliagmenis Avenue heading towards Athens.
Carry on until you see the CITY PLAZA shopping mall on your right.
Turn right at the traffic lights just before the CITY PLAZA into Antheon St.
Follow directions as above.
Ano
Kifissia (Athens
Northern Suburbs)
From down town Athens follow Kifisias Av. northwards through Kifisia and after EKO gas station turn right onto Mouson Str; at the next traffic light turn right onto Harilaou Trikoupi and follow the signs for Melissia. Carry on along this road; follow round the sharp left hand turn onto Bakogiani Street. Keep straight (do not bear right - you may have to cut across the traffic) & after 1Km turn left onto Orfeos Str and go ahead to meet Rodou str. Hash starts here in the car park. Follow the hash signs (HHH) from Bakogiani str.
ALTERNATIVE:
For those with navigational aids (not the disease) we'll start at the intersection
of Mavromichali & Skyrou streets (page 27A on my A-Z-like book) above the
Kefalari area in Kifissia.
Long hand, from the south:
Get to Kifissias ave. and go north (you can even start from the old, marble
Olympic stadium, keep going straight north, on and on)
If you are on Attiki Odos, exit to Kifissias Ave and go North.
Stay on Kifissias Ave, bypassing Maroussi, go past the Kifissia main square
(McDonalds to the right, bus station & Kifissia park to the left) for another
500m or so. Make a right on Mousson St.. It's right after an EKO petrol station
and right before a BP station. (HHH signs will hopefully start there). At the
first traffic lights, make a right on Char. Trikoupi. (DO NOT go straight to
the mustang stables). On Char. Trikoupi (has median divider), go past the traffic
lights crossing Delligianni and Philadelfeos St. (Applebee's corner), past Pentelis
St.. and left on Mavromichali Street. (if on Char. Trikoupi the slight uphill
turns to a downhill dip, you just passed it). Go up on Mavromichali for ~1.5km
till a wide clearing to the right. We start there.
From the north: coming down Kifissias Ave (or it's extension, everything is called "El Venizelou" these days, it's hopeless) pass N.Erythraia and as soon as you're about to enter Kifissia proper make a left on Char. Trikoupi. Keep going (road curves initially) straight, past the 3 traffic lights and carry as above. First light is Mousson St.. to the right, Xenias to the left, another brilliant idea:~)
Alternatively, if coming
from the National Road (Ethniki), exit on Varibobi junction, go east (Kifissia,
Ekali) to the traffic lights, make a right (south) on Tatoiou St. and after
1km+ a left on Char. Trikoupi at the traffic lights. (there is a petrol station
on the NE corner and the 'Siniouris' loonie hospital on the SE... save these
directions, you might want to check in after the run!).
On Char. Trikoupi, cross Kifissias Ave.. and proceed as above.
Melissia Cemetery
Venue: Melissia Cemetery Road
We meet
on the road leading to the Melissia Cemetery
(GPS users - we meet at: 38 04.168 North, 023 50.685 East.
Google Earth: 38 04.168 N, 023 50.685 E)
DIRECTIONS:
Coming up Kifissias Avenue from the city centre:
Head North on Kifissias Avenue until you come to Maroussi (Spot a large Gilli
Diet building on your left).
500m after you pass a left fork into Maroussi centre, look out for a large Germanos
building on your left.
Take the right turn at the traffic lights (signposted for Melissia) immediately
opposite this building.
If you pass the Shell petrol station in 50m on your right you have missed the
turning!
Follow this road (Odos Pentelis) for a couple of Km (there is a sharp bend over
a bridge after the first Km).
As you enter Melissia you will see a AB supermarket on your left opposite a
bakery on your right.
Get in the right-hand lane NOW & slow down & quickly read the next 3-lines!
Almost immediately after the AB supermarket you will see a BP petrol station
on your left.
You need to go left (up the hill) after the BP petrol station but a left turn
into 25 Martiou is not allowed.
So just after the AB, turn RIGHT, go round the square and then go across Odos
Pentelis.
You are now on 25 Martiou (and going up a hill).
(Hint: From now just keep going on this road until you see the sign pointing
left & uphill to the Melissia Cemetery).
After about 800 metres you come to a major junction with traffic lights.
Go straight over - you are now on 17 November and will see shops either side.
Keep going straight ahead on 17 November (even though most traffic will go left).
(You will pass a large square and Saint George's church on your right).
17 November now becomes Ag Ioannou and after 500 metres meets Terpsitheas**
Turn right at Terpsitheas and then look out for the signs for the Melissia Cemetery
(Nekrotafeio Melission).
If you need help, ask for the Magginas Taverna or Plateia Ethniki Antistaseos
which are close by.
We are meeting on the road leading to the Melissia Cemetery.
Coming from Kifissia...
Get on Harilaou Trikoupi in Kifissia / Kefalari.
At the South end of Harilaou Trikoupi, follow all the traffic LEFT towards Melissia.
After 500 metres all the traffic turns right and immediately left.
(you pass a garden centre on your right opposite the Vergina bakery on your
left).
After 1km you reach a busy junction (this is Ano Melissia).
Most traffic turns right here - but you turn LEFT (towards the large square
& Saint George's church).
You are now on 17 November street which becomes Ag Ioannou.
Follow directions as above**
(Hint: Now just keep going on this road until you see the sign pointing left
& uphill to the Melissia Cemetery).
NOTE: Hash signs to be posted near the cemetery road.

From the South:
Follow Kifissias Ave northwards towards Maroussi and at the Maroussi square
& Germanos building on the left, turn RIGHT for Melissia, (see small sign
for Melissia in Greek). Carry on up this road (Odos Pendelis ...changing to
Democratias further up) until you come to a hairpin bend. After the bend, ski
shop (right) and kiosk (left) continue on up until you see a large BP petrol
station on your left (just before you enter the centre of Melissia). You need
to turn LEFT here but you can't (legally). You must turn Right and go round
the grass island (as the sign indicates) in order to turn left. Continue on
up the hill (this is 25th March street), passing the Amelia Fleming hospital
on your right and continue STRAIGHT on, through the traffic lights at the cross
roads (when green!).
Continued Directions for all routes >>>>>
Continue straight and pass the big Eleftherias square (Ano Melissia) on your
right and then St. George's church on your right (Note: the road has now become
17th November street).
After passing
the church just continue on this road (after a while it will curve to the right)
and shortly you will come to the taverna area (you will see a bus stop on the
left). Park around here or turn right and go down and park around or behind
the Theatre / playground area.
From Kifissia / Ekali / Politia etc:
Come the back way on Harilaou Trikoupi street towards Ano Melissia, passing
Kefalari square on your right. Continue on straight, then round the Left, Right
and Left bends and continue straight again (sign posted for Melissia, Stavros,
Airport, etc). When you arrive at the (usually busy) T-junction in Ano Melissia,

Useful
Information
Ordering a meal for the hasher's
at a taverna
The trick to keeping the bill reasonable is to order lots of starters and little or no meat. If you order paidakia or brizoles (or whatever) the bill will double. If anyone asks you to order meat, explain this and try to dissuade them.
Divide the number of people by 4 (and round down). Then order this quantity of each starter they have with extra chips and maybe one round of sausage (loukaniko).
For example, with 18 people order:
4 Greek salads, 4 tzatziki, 4 tyropitas, 4 saganaki, 4 loukaniko, 4 kolokothakia, 4 melitsanasalata, 4 gigantes etc. etc and 6 plates of chips. Plus loads of beers, barrel wine & softies.
I have used this system countless times and it always works - last Saturday we had a feast with enormous quantities of wine and it came to 12 Euros a head.
Hope this helps,
The Bookmaker
Ice - where to buy it
Vassilopoulos (A+B) supermarkets
have ice (at around EUR 1.3 / 2.5kg)
Some garages (notably Shell) also have ice (EUR 2.0 a bag)
The Venetis chain of pastry shops often have ice machines outside.
